Funding

1) What was the budget for Chicken?
£110,000

2) How did Joe Stephenson end up raising the money to make the film?

  • He got the money from friends and family.
  • Raised entirely through investment by individuals (e.g. rich friends/contacts)
  • No funding body (e.g. BFI Film Fund) was willing to fund Chicken
  • Raises questions about whether film industry is accessible to lower-income filmmakers

3) How does the Chicken budget compare to a Hollywood-funded British blockbuster such as Spectre or Paddington 2?
Chicken's budget came in as a micro-budget of £110,000 whereas paddington's budget was £50,000,000

4) Joe Stephenson tried to secure funding from organisations that help low-budget filmmakers. What is the BFI Film Fund and how does it contribute to the British film industry?
The BFI uses National Lottery funds to develop and support original UK filmmakers and films, and to increase the audiences who can enjoy them. 

5) Why do you think Chicken failed to secure funding from the BFI Film Fund?

Because the film's focus is on a very controversial topic which not everyone may feel comfortable watching therefore the BFI assumed the film would be a failure and wouldn't be able to make it mainstream.

Production

1) What difficulties did the film run into during production?

Since the majority of scenes were shot outdoors meaning they had to hope for the best weather conditions. They also used something called Guerilla Filiming which is when all shots are done quickly and all available resources are used as fast as possible.

2) How many days did the film take to shoot?

The film took 19 days to film, mostly outside.

3) What scenes were particularly difficult for Joe Stephenson to film?

The scenes that involved the chicken (they had to switch chickens depending on the tone of the scene) and the outdoor scenes, depending on the weather.


Distribution

1) Why did the film fail to secure a distribution deal when first made in 2014?
it wasn't thought to have a large viewing once it would have been released.

2) What film festivals did Chicken feature at between 2014-2016?

Two-year festival circuit won awards and generated interest and critical acclaim for film.

3) Why are film festivals an effective way for a low-budget film to secure a distribution deal?

Festivals are effective as they promote low-budget films completely free of charge and winning or earning a high spot on the list can be used as a certification for the producer, and their skills.

4) When was Chicken released in cinemas in the UK?

UK cinema release followed in May 2016. Selected for film subscription service MUBI and acquired by Film4 for TV premiere in April 2017.

5) Why do you think film subscription service MUBI chose the film to feature on the service?

They feature a lot of original and fresh movies that are niche and won't make it mainstream any time soon. 

6) Why was Film4 a good choice to give the film its UK television premiere?

Because it'll reach a UK audience, and it'll make the producer money aswell as give him publicity so possibly he can in the future get funding from the BFI.

7) When will the film be released on iTunes and other video-on-demand services in the USA and Canada?

UK DVD release distributed by Network Releasing. Digital distribution in USA/Canada – January 2018.



Promotion

1) What does the trailer suggest regarding genre and the potential audience pleasures of Chicken?

The trailer suggests several scenes of action and drama which may appeal to a mainstream audiences.

2) What synergy can you find between the trailer and other traditional marketing methods such as the film poster?

The trailer includes several scenes of the scenery and is clearly promoting the cinematography of the movie as is the film poster.

3) Why are reviews from industry figures such as Mark Kermode so important to a film's success?

If people see a well known critic such at Mark Kermode talking positively about a movie that people haven't heard nor seen much about will intrigue them and possible encourage them to go ahead and watch the movie.

4) How does the Chicken Twitter account create and maintain interest in the film?
They're continuously promoting their film and keeping people updated on the films success. 

5) Who does the Twitter account re-tweet? How does this help to promote the film?

The twitter account re-tweets people's opinion on the movie (All positive) on the movie.

6) How does the Chicken Facebook page use images and video content to promote the film?

The facebook page has video promotion for the movie as well as a lot of image promotion telling people where their movie is being featured and any promotion based medias.

7) What pages are liked by the Chicken Facebook page? What does this tell you about the film and potential target audience?

The Chicken Facebook page has liked other pages such as: Everyman Cinemas and Boys by Girls. Boys by Girls is a mens fashion magazine with just under 100,000 followers on social media sites such as Instagram. This suggests that Chicken may be well received by niche audiences, such as those who enjoy reading the publications of Boys by Girls etc.

8) Go to the B Good Picture Company's website page for Chicken. What celebrities are mentioned on the page? Why might they be highlighted?

The front page is very artistic and shows popular people such as William Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde. 

9) Now go to the film's official website. What is the key purpose of the website and what does this tell you about the influence of new technology and how it is changing howpeople watch films?

The website is incredibly simplistic and and shows us a beautiful shot of the setting.

10) Go to the B Good Picture Company YouTube channel. What videos feature on the channel? How do they help to promote Chicken? 
Shows us clips and trailers all related to the movie.
