Moonlight

• Chiron is a character of few words. Why is this? How do the three
actors use body language to communicate Chiron’s emotions to the
audience? Why is he reluctant to make eye contact with people?

All three actors use body language to convey their feelings throughout the movie, therefore the lack of speech from Chiron is easily overlooked as the audience in able to interpret clearly what he wants to say and how he's feeling. His reluctance to make eye contact can suggest his loss of trust towards people which was caused by his rough up bringing and constantly being hurt by others.

• Did anything about the Miami setting surprise you, compared to
its party image in popular culture? How does the saturated colour
capture the image of the city the filmmakers are trying to convey?

This image of Miami shows a completely different side, showing the audience the gritty and run down poverty stricken neighbourhoods where people go through daily struggles. The saturated colours show that just because a place may be quite nice and seem pleasant it will still have a dark side, as Miami is mostly beaches and bustling city, yet the directors managed to capture the ghetto's in the same way they would that city despite the ghettos being nothing alike.

• What is the significance of Juan? How is his influence felt over the
entire film, despite the fact he is only present in the first chapter?

Juan is presented as a father figure for Chiron in chapter I and seems to be the only person who truly cares for him (Along with Theresa), this makes Juan important to the audience. After he's gone though his influence seems to have stuck as Chiron seems more talkative in the second chapter than the first (Which is possibly thanks to Juan) and has a complete shift in character in the third chapter completely resembling Juan. It could be said that Chiron ended up the way he did because of Juan's influence.

• Several key sequences take place on the beach, or near the ocean.
Why do you think the filmmakers centred so much of the film around
this location?

I think it was done to show purity and present the tranquillity Chiron wants in his life but cannot achieve. Every time Chiron is at/near the beach he is safe and sound from anyone, whereas in any other places he seems to be shouted at, has people making rude remarks to him and even beaten up. The beach is presented like a safe space for Chiron and I think that's why the director emphasised the freedom and peace the beach gives.

• Did anything about Chiron in the final chapter surprise you? To what
extent do you think he is being true to “himself” before and after his
reunion with Kevin? What did you make of his various nicknames?

I think Chirons shift in character was definitely surprising as he was usually at the bottom of the food chain and would get bullied, not being able to defend himself from anyone, to running a drug business and having people scared. I think this may genuinely be Chiron being himself as he saw Juan as a father figure and his life style may have caught Chirons attention. But I think Chrion simply has two sides to his character, a soft and a tough side, both of which he only shows to certain people. I think all the various nicknames show his development as a boy to teen to man, as initially he's called Little and he doesn't seem to mind that, until he become a teen where he no longer wants to be called that. Once he grows older he goes by the name Black which is more serious.
