Sound Task.

Funny Games

1. What is the director saying about the family from the choice of music played?
The director is trying to present them as a typical upper class family, along with a hint of sophistication.
2. How would you describe this use of music?
The initial use of music is parallel and diegetic as it's coming from the car radio and suits the family theme. Then the music switches to heavy punk rock which is non-diegetic and contrapuntal as it's not what we'd associate with a upper class family.
3. How do you think the narrative might develop?
The use of the punk rock music is probably foreshadowing some sort of disequilibrium that may occur later on in the movie.

Clockwork Orange
1. Discuss the choice of music. Is it the kind of music you would expect for this scene?
The director uses contrapuntal music (Classical) over a sinister scene.
2. Why do you think the director used this piece to go with the action on the screen?
He does this to present the character as more psychopathic as these sort of things are normal for him.

Once Upon A Time In The West.

1. What sounds do you hear? How do they help to build up tension?
The fly buzzing and the rocking of the chair help to build tension as the audiences hearing is more in use than their sight.2. Can you identify the sound bridge? What is the effect on the audience?
This helps intrigue the viewers.

Once Upon A Time In America

1. Discuss what sound is diegetic and what is non-diegetic.
The bells are diegetic at first, but once the sounds is used in the flashback it becomes non-diegetic as the characters obviously can't hear that.
2. How does the director use the sound of the phone to link the narrative?
The sounds used may mean something to the main character being the reason why he has flashbacks about them.

The music in the back-ground is non-diegetic but sets the mood for the audience and builds tension as it's subtle and calm before the battles speeds up as it the battle is about to start and completely cuts out once it actually starts. The sound of horses, clanging of swords and men shouting adds to the immersion of the movie and helps create a greater sense of realism.
